7/23/21 - Today we crossed the Mississippi River into Iowa. Hot here, in the low 90's all day. The take away from Iowa are huge farms as far as you can see for hundreds of miles.

Along the way we stopped at two important birth places; Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States and the future birth place of James T. Kirk, Captain of the S.S. Enterprise of Star Trek fame.

First, Herbert Hoover born August 10, 1874 , died October 20, 1964, served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933. A member of the Republican Party, he held office during the onset of the Great Depreciation. Blamed for the stock market crash of "29" he lost his reelection bid. Hoover and his two siblings lived in a two room home in the plains of Iowa. They became orphans after both parents passed away and were split up among family members. Herbert was sent to Oregon to live with an uncle. He was trained as a geologist at college, started his own business and traveled the world multiple times with his wife, Lou. Both Herbert and Lou are buried on a hill overlooking his birthplace.

Second is the "Future" birthplace of James T, Kirk, birth date March 22, 2228 in Riverside, Iowa. The monument is adjacent to the Town Hall between two buildings. I can assure you this is Riverside's only claim to fame. No idea why the TV show picked this town.

  1. Catching up on your travels these past couple of days. Hot enough for you? We are waiting for rain this evening, which is desperately needed in our whole state.

Looking forward to catching up with you in person in a few days--it's coming up fast. I am trying to get our stuff from the Hood Canal trip put away, along with the toys from Em & Iz's kids' visit, before we head to North Dakota.

Keep having fun--we will see you soon!

    Love,
    Beth and Jon
