8/4 & 8/5/21 - We traveled to Bighorn Canyon on the Montana and Wyoming border on the 4th. There is no cell service where we are camping so we drove out to the top of the mountain for reception.

Along the way we stopped at Pompeys Pillar Nat'l Monument where Wm Clark of Lewis and Clark etched his name in the sandstone rock in 1806. This is the only known spot where either explorer left their mark. Actually the park is well done and worth a stop if driving by.

   Two explorers!
We didn't arrive until late afternoon on the 4th to Bighorn Canyon but did go exploring a bit. Lots of Bighorn Sheep and wild horses here.

Today 8/5: we took a canyon rim hike and then up a dusty road to Caroline Lockhart's 6,000 acre cattle ranch from the 30's. She was quite a woman, an adventurer and writer for magazines and later books about the western U.S. She was honored by the Cattle Association for her ranch operation.
Wendy decided that she wants to put down roots.

Last up was a 2 hour boat ride on the Old Belle into the canyon. A much different perspective looking up 500 to 1,500 feet to the rim. We were pretty lucky to watch a group of 9 Bighorn sheep climb down the 1,500 canyon walls to get a drink of water. Love to attach the video but it will not upload from my mountain top cell site.

Bighorn sheep at the river's edge after descending 1,500 feet. They made it look easy.

  1. We know who Wendy learned the "leg up" pose from on the picture in front of the cabin! Looks like a wonderful campsite and area. Have fun!
